I live in New York City. No one ever looks down. If you did, you'd either be crushed by a passerby texting wildly on their phone or run over by a local food messenger, riding their bike in the wrong direction. One day, for some reason, I did look down. It's a mess. Unlike other cities in America, New York's sidewalks are full of garbage. On my block alone there must be 1,000 cigarette butts. Sadly, that's not an exaggeration. I pulled out my phone and began to shoot. The photographs are called the Smokers' Detritus series.
